Song of Poland: 28th annual festival celebrates Polish Jewish music, past and future

Olga Mielesczuk is a Polish singer who specializes in the music of her country’s Jewish heritage. Yet she
didn’t start singing that music professionally until she moved to Israel, more than 1,500 miles away.
1_coverThere, Mielesczuk and her Jerusalem-based band, Polesye, began performing the forgotten Jewish folk songs of her homeland. Those songs recall a vanished Jewish culture that thrived in Poland for a thousand years.
Polesye (named for Poland’s northern marshlands) will headline opening night of the Jewish Music Festival on March 2 at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre. The 28th annual event is co-sponsored by the Taube Foundation for Jewish Life and Culture, in association with the S.F.-based Israel Center and the consulates of Israel and Poland.
This year’s festival includes eight musical and educational events at various East Bay venues from March 2 to March 12.
Sharing the stage with Polesye on opening night will be journalist Ruth Ellen Gruber, who will lead a discussion addressing Jewish life in Poland today, and Polish jazz trio Shofar, which turns Jewish folk melodies into thrilling, avant-garde jazz rants.
Other artists performing at the festival include American klezmer revival pioneer Michael Alpert, Bay Area–based Real Vocal String Quartet and True Life Trio, and 88-year-old legendary singer-actor Theodore Bikel, teaming up with Yiddish singer Shura Lipovsky of the Netherlands.
There’s a reason why Polesye and Shofar landed coveted opening-night slots. As its central theme this year, the festival is celebrating the once thriving, nearly destroyed and now resurgent Jewish life of Poland. Some 8,000 Jews today call Poland home, down from the 3.4 million before the Holocaust.

The two bands form perfect bookends, one honoring tradition and the other paving new musical pathways.
“There is a kind of renaissance of Jewish culture,” Mielesczuk, 34, says of her homeland. “The religious communities are rebuilt, and there are a lot of festivals. Each small town that used to be a shtetl wants to have its own festival and [Holocaust] Memorial Day.”
In April, the world marks the 70th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, the boldest armed resistance Jews demonstrated against their Nazi oppressors.
In addition, 2013 also commemorates  the 100th anniversary of the famed ethnographic expedition of 1912 to 1914, during which S. Ansky (author of the Yiddish play “The Dybbuk”) and his fellow researchers collected hundreds of Yiddish folk tunes in shtetls across Poland and Ukraine, the so-called Pale of Settlement.
Beyond presenting Polish artists, the Jewish Music Festival will feature lectures and symposia about the impact Polish Jews had not only on Polish culture but on diaspora Jewry, as well.
“Our ancestors there helped shape what we are and how we see Jewish culture today,” says festival director Ellie Shapiro, who has traveled to Poland often over the last decade. “We can only be enriched by understanding more about our communal past.”
Mielesczuk, a classically trained pianist-turned-singer of Slavic folk tunes, discovered East European Jewish folk music six years ago at, of all places, Auschwitz-Birkenau, where she was taking part in a Holocaust memorial event.
She sat by the infamous train tracks on which cattle cars filled with human cargo once rolled. There she encountered a Hassidic rabbi chanting prayers. The haunting melodies intrigued her and she joined in. That was the beginning of her love affair with the lost Jewish music of Poland.

While attending the 2009 Krakow Jewish Music Festival, Mielesczuk met Shapiro, who then introduced her to Barbara Kirschenblatt-Gimblett, a Yiddishist and curator of Warsaw’s Museum of the History of Polish Jews, due to open next year.
Through that friendship, Mielesczuk discovered the music of Mariam Nirenberg, a Polish Jew who immigrated to Canada in the 1930s, bringing with her a trove of folk tunes. Rare mid-20th-century Nirenberg recordings opened up to Mielesczuk a new world of Yiddish folk music.
“I fell in love with the songs,” Mielesczuk recalls, “and started to work on them very slowly. Mariam was a real folk singer from a little village. She was one of the very few authentic Yiddish folk singers that survived. This is special because we don’t know much about traditional Yiddish singing. She was pure folk.”
After moving to Israel 18 months ago, Mielesczuk practiced singing Nirenberg’s songs in the cypress woods near her Jerusalem neighborhood. It wasn’t quite the forbidding forests of the Pale, but those sojourns helped the singer connect with the music.
After forming her quartet last year, she recorded a debut CD, “Jewish Folksongs from the Shtetl,” on which Mielesczuk sings and plays accordion. For the festival, members of the East Bay–based klezmer trio Veretski Pass will join Mielesczuk and Polesye on stage.
And while Polesye plays it old school, Shofar is as new school as it gets.
The Warsaw-based guitar-drum-sax trio churns out free jazz improvisations reminiscent of the dissonant chaos of Pharaoh Sanders, Albert Ayler and late-era John Coltrane.
Their music is a hot mess of jazzy goodness, with a Polish Hassidic twist thrown in.

“So many [Polish] bands play Jewish music for fun, dancing and drinking beer,” says 46-year-old sax player Mikolaj Trzaska. “They are not asking what kind of music it is. What we tried to do in Shofar is develop Jewish culture by playing the pieces our way.”
For Shofar’s debut 2007 CD, the band delved into the Yiddish tunes collected by Moshe Beregovski (1892-1961) a Ukrainian ethnomusicologist who specialized in Yiddish folk songs, nigunim and klezmer. From 1929 to 1947, he traveled across Ukraine, completing some 2,000 recordings on 700 old-fashioned phonograph cylinders that managed to survive World War II.
Shofar has played across Europe and Israel, but the band’s fans are not the only ones impacted by the music. Trzaska, who grew up in the communist era and knew little about Judaism, rediscovered his heritage through the Beregovski songs.
“Thanks to this project, this is the beginning of my identifying with Jewish culture and history,” he says. “Not by religion, but by music.”
Trzaska notes the resurgent Jewish pride typifies a transformed social landscape where ethnic Russians, Ukrainians, Jews and others recast Poland as a multicultural haven.
“When the [communist] system was over, people in Poland started digging into their cultures and finding their roots, not only Jewish people,” Trzaska says. “That’s why we have such a beautiful situation. Jewish culture was part of Polish culture. It couldn’t exist without Jews. A lot of musicians and poets were Jewish, and they created Polish culture.”
That’s not to say that the virulent brand of anti-Semitism that existed in Poland for centuries has been completely eradicated. Festival director Shapiro, who applauds the progressive changes she has witnessed in Poland, knows there is more work to be done.

“I don’t want to romanticize it,” she says. “I don’t want to say ‘Strike up a klezmer chord and strike down anti-Semitism.’ There is still anti-Semitism all over the world. But I have never seen Jewish music operate in such a way [as] to help move a society in a democratic way.”
She means the many Jewish music and culture festivals — Krakow’s being the largest in Poland, if not the world. The celebration draws hundreds of thousands of people (mostly non-Jews) annually.
The Jewish renaissance in Poland is going so well, Shapiro believes the Poles can teach American Jews a thing or two about history.
“The incredible energy in Poland [regarding] Jewish music and culture can only be helpful in reinforcing Jewish music in this country,” she says. “Historically there is a deep connection between Poland and American Jews. The tragedies of the 20th century cut that off. We closed that part of our history to ourselves. What I’m trying to do is revive that connection.”
In Poland, Trzaska and his band are happy to celebrate Jewish culture, though he acknowledges  it will never be the same as it was before the Holocaust.
On a recent national tour, Shofar performed a gig in a Polish town near the Belarus border. The venue that night: a long-abandoned synagogue that once served as the hub of a bustling Jewish community. It has stood empty for decades. With the concert, however, Jewish music once again echoed in the sanctuary.
After the Jewish Music Festival gig in Berkeley, Trzaska wants to play in more abandoned synagogues and do what he can to bring them back to life.
“There are no Jewish people now [in the synagogues],” he says, “but the energy still exists.”

Shofar - trzyosobowy projekt Rogińskiego, Trzaski i Morettiego oraz pieśniarka Olga Mieleszczuk koncertują wspólnie w Nowym Jorku, Berkeley i Vancouver, wystąpią też  podczas 28 edycji kalifornijskiego Jewish Music Festival.
Celem Olgi Mieleszczuk jest rekonstrukcja tradycji, natomiast grupa Shofar łączy elementy muzyki chasydzkiej z jazzem, rockiem i psychodelicznymi brzmieniami. Na ich pierwszym  wspólnym koncercie w David Rubenstein Atrium w Lincoln Center zabrakło wolnych miejsc.
Mieleszczuk zaprezentowała nasycone nostalgią utwory z najnowszego albumu "Jewish folksongs from the shtetl" (Tradycyjne pieśni sztetla). Czerpie on inspirację z twórczości Mariam Nirenberg, pieśniarki urodzonej na Polesiu na początku XX wieku. Celem Mieleszczuk jest zarówno rekonstrukcja, jak i stworzenie nowych aranżacji tych pieśni, które dotychczas znane były w kręgach muzykologów i etnografów.
Mieleszczuk śpiewa głównie w języku jidysz, a także po białorusku, rosyjsku i ukraińsku. Po polsku zaprezentowała w Nowym Jorku przepełniony tęsknotą "Polesia czar" powstały w latach 20. minionego wieku. Artystce towarzyszyli muzycy amerykańscy i izraelscy: skrzypaczka Lisa Gutkin (obecnie grającą z Klezmatics), gitarzysta i wirtuoz wschodniego fletu ney Ittai Binnun oraz akordeonista i pianista Uri Sharlin.
"Projekt ma w USA premierę światową. W Polsce po raz pierwszy zostanie pokazany w Muzeum Historii Żydów Polskich po jego otwarciu" - mówi w rozmowie z PAP Mieleszczuk, która ma nadzieję, że amerykańskie występy rozbudzą zainteresowanie jej projektem także w Izraelu.

Zespół Shofar tworzą: sakosfonista Mikołaj Trzaska, gitarzysta Raphael Rogiński i perkusista Macio Moretti. Ich repertuar łączy muzykę chasydzką z free jazzem. Ekspresyjne, dynamiczne utwory Shofar nawiązują do tradycyjnej, religijnej muzyki żydowskiej, a kiedy indziej do muzyki tanecznej. Nigunim - pieśni religijne mające za zadanie wywołanie ekstazy - pojawiają się obok tanecznych frejlaków i utworów zaczerpniętych bezpośrednio z żydowskiej liturgii.
"Zarówno Rogiński, jak ja mamy korzenie żydowskie. Dla nas obu ta muzyka jest sposobem, w jaki rozwijamy się i znajdujemy przestrzeń w jakiej możemy się wypowiedzieć " - wyjaśnił PAP Trzaska. Jego zdaniem zespół gra muzykę żydowską tak, jak powinna brzmieć dzisiaj.
"Bardzo ciekawa jest kombinacja Polesia, mającego tradycyjne brzmienie, traktującego muzykę z historycznej perspektywy, pokazującego prawdziwą historię – z Shofarem, który też korzysta z tych wpływów, ale przetwarza je na coś zupełnie nowego" - mówił dyrektor Bill Bragin z Lincoln Center.
W artykule "The Sound of Change: Jewish Music in Poland" dyrektorka artystyczna Jewish Music Festival Eleanor Shapiro pisze:
"Mam nadzieję, że debiutanckie tournee polskiego Shofaru oraz polsko-izraelskiego Polesye w Ameryce Północnej będzie momentem otwierającym nową perspektywę dla amerykańskiej publiczności. Będą mieli szansę odkryć dźwięki współczesnego polskiego jazzu, który czerpie inspirację z żydowskich źródeł. Amerykańscy Żydzi, z których większość odnajduje swoje korzenie na ziemiach dawniej należących do Polski, znajdą tu zachętę do odkrywania własnej historii, zbiorowej przeszłości, jaką zostawili za sobą opuszczając pokład łodzi na Ellis Island”.
Podczas amerykańskiego tournee, zorganizowanego przy współpracy Instytutu Kultury Polskiej w Nowym Jorku, obydwa zespoły wezmą 25 lutego udział w 2013 Chutzpah! Festival w Vancouver, w Kanadzie. 2 marca otworzą natomiast 28. Jewish Music Festival w Berkeley w Kalifornii. Koncertować też będą w klubach muzycznych w innych miastach.

"The Rich Past and Edgy Future of Jewish Music Live at Lincoln Center"

Last night at Lincoln Center, singer/accordionist Olga Mieleszczuk’s Polesye Project and the Shofar Trio made their American debuts in an often riveting program that spanned some of the best of Jewish music from the 19th century to the present, both melodically and lyrically. With a nuanced, expressive voice that ranged from plaintive and haunting to coyly whimsical, Mieleszczuk led her band - Ittai Binnun on multi-reeds and guitar and Uri Sharlin on accordion and piano, with the Klezmatics’ Lisa Gutkin guesting on violin – through an eclectic set of material from the repertoire of 1930s-era Polish-Canadian chanteuse Mariam Nirenberg. Nirenberg hailed from Polesye (now encompassing adjacent parts of Poland, Belarus, the Ukraine and Russia), “one of the wildest and most mysterious regions,” as Mieleszczuk put it, managing to make an escape just as Hitler’s reign of terror was getting underway. The songs she brought with her spanned much of the Jewish diaspora in Europe, as well as a similar range of emotional terrain rich with irony and dark humor. The band opened with a sad brooding, klezmer waltz and closed with a lushly glimmering art-rock version of a Yiddish pop hit from the era that Nirenberg had recast as a lullaby. In between, they romped through a couple of dance numbers livened with Gutkin’s alternately wry and biting lines, a bitter deathbed ballad from Russia, a jauntily sardonic number about a guy who can’t seem to hook up with any of the girls at the party despite his fancy shoes, and a swooping and then sweepingly triumphant take of the old Ukrainian folk song Akh Odessa, done as more of an adventurous immigrant’s tale than nostalgic look back.http://newyorkmusicdaily.wordpress.com/2013/02/22/olga/#comments
